The Paint Creek Trail beginnings go back to the 1800s, when a railroad was constructed on the route by the Detroit and Bay City Railroad. Over the years, it was owned and operated by the Michigan Central Railroad, the New York Central, and finally the Penn Central, moving passengers and freight along Paint Creek. The railroad has been removed, replaced with an easy-riding crushed stone, and footbridges, benches, and overlooks have been added, making the 8.5-mile trail one of the best rails-to-trails in the state. Things to see: Scenic views of Paint Creek, ponds, cedar swamps, Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, cider mill.
